WHAT ARE ANOBOLIC STEROIDS AND THEIR HEALTH EFFECTS?

Anabolic androgenic steroids are derived from the male hormone, testosterone, and are used legally to treat problems such as delayed puberty or low testosterone.  The steroids can enhance the body by building more muscle, making bones and muscles stronger, lowering body fat and increasing endurance.  Common anabolic steroid medicines include fluoxymeterone (such as Holtestin) and nandrolone (such as Durabolin).  Over time individuals who use these steroids may exhibit mental and emotional side effects including violent behavior, personality changes, mood swings between depression and anxiety and paranoia.  They can also cause severe physical symptoms, such as heart attack, high blood pressure and liver disease or cancer.

Anabolic steroid use to improve athletic performance has been detected in several Olympic and professional athletes over the years.  For these athletes, and for some high school and college athletes, the use of steroids, also called “doping”, to enhance performance is considered to provide an unfair advantage and is against International Olympic Committee rules, most professional athletic organizations’ rules and high school/college athletic program rules.  To ensure that athletes are not doping many organizations that supervise and manage athletes may test for anabolic steroid use.

WHY DO I NEED TO BE TESTED FOR ANABOLIC STEROIDS?

Do you need to ensure that a teen or athlete is not using steroids?  Are you worried about physical or emotional changes?  Do you need to monitor a team to ensure compliance with “no doping” rules?

The extreme advantage over others who are not enhancing their athletic performance with steroids is illegal and can create serious issues for athletes and teams competing on the local and national stage.  In addition, long term use has been associated with severe side effects including:

·         Incomplete bone growth in a teen who may never reach their full potential height

·         Heart attack or stroke, even in young people,

·         High blood pressure

·         Oily skin and acne

·         Higher cholesterol levels (higher LDL or “bad” cholesterol and lower HDL or “good” cholesterol)

·         Liver disease and liver cancer

·         Male pattern hair loss

·         Irritability, rage, mania or delusions

·         Reduced sperm count, shrunken testicles and infertility in men

·         Male characteristics in women such as increased body hair, lowering of the voice, smaller breasts, and rough skin

Steroid use can be dangerous without proper care from a doctor and is illegal without a prescription.  Athletic programs are not permitted to allow athletes to use anabolic steroids and many required testing to ensure that athletes are conforming to the rules.  If you are unsure about your teen or the athletes in your program, get them tested today.
