WHAT IS AN AVUNCULAR DNA TEST?

With an Avuncular DNA test you can determine if a child is your biological niece or nephew.  This is an indirect test to determine a family relationship and can be useful if the alleged father is not available for DNA testing.

It is recommended that the mother participate in the testing along with the child and the sibling of the alleged father.   An analysis of the child’s DNA is compared with the DNA of the alleged father’s sibling and the child’s mother.  Since a child inherits half of their DNA from the mother and half from the father, the paternal half should match the DNA from the alleged sibling of the father.  The mother’s participation is encouraged to eliminate her half of the child’s DNA, leaving the other half to test for the paternal contribution.

ANY LAB TEST NOW®’s DNA testing laboratory partner examines 20 genetic markers, unlike other DNA labs that only test 16, improving the overall probability of relationship.

WHY DO I NEED AN AVUNCULAR DNA TEST?

Do you want to confirm the identity of the father of a child?  Is the father deceased or unavailable?

The avuncular DNA test can help to determine the paternity of a child if the alleged father is missing or deceased.  If you need the test results for legal purposes such as child custody, visitation or death benefits get the Chain-of-Custody Avuncular DNA Test.

TEST DETAILS:

The process is very simple.  Our professional medical assistant will rub soft swabs on the inside of both cheeks of the child and the sibling of the alleged father to collect epithelial cell (skin cell) samples.   If you have a specimen with DNA on it, please ask our medical assistant if we are able to do the test on your specimen and to obtain additional pricing information.

RESULTS:

This test will reflect the probability of a relationship.  A “0” means there is no biological relationship.

HIGH PROBABILITY OF RELATIONSHIP:

If the avuncular index is greater than 1.00, this indicates that the tested individuals are more likely to be true biological relatives.  The higher the value of the index, the greater the likelihood that the individuals are biological relatives.

LOW PROBABILITY OF RELATIONSHIP:

If the avuncular index is less than 1.00, this indicates likelihood of non-relatedness.

NOTE: If the mother is not included in the avuncular DNA test, the test results may not be conclusive.
