EHRLICHIOSIS LAB TEST

Description

WHAT IS AN EHRLICHIA LAB TEST?

The Ehrlichia Lab Test tests for a specific tick-borne disease.  Ehrlichiosis is a serious illness that can be fatal if not treated correctly, even in previously healthy people.  Ehrlichiosis is the general name used to describe several bacterial diseases that affect animals and humans. Human ehrlichiosisis is a disease caused by at least four different ehrlichial species transmitted by ticks:  Ehrlichia chaffeensis, Ehrlichia ewingii, Ehrlichia canis, and a Ehrlichia species called Ehrlichia muris-like (EML).

WHAT IS THE PRICE OF A EHRLICHIA LAB TEST?

$220.00

WHY DO I NEED TO BE TESTED FOR EHRLICHIOSIS?

Ehrlichiosis is transmitted to humans by tick bites primarily from the lone star ticks (Amblyomma_americanum), but can also be potentially transmitted by other tick species of the genera Ixodes, Dermacentor, and Rhipicephalus. Historically, ehrlichiosis was considered an acute disease in humans; however, more recent evidence indicates that persistent infections can occur in humans, as commonly occurs in dogs and other animal species.
The symptoms commonly seen with acute human ehrlichiosis varies greatly from person to person and may include:

• Fever
• Headache
• Chills
• Malaise
• Muscle pain
• Nausea / Vomiting / Diarrhea
• Confusion
• Conjunctival injection (red eyes)
• Rash (in up to 60% of children, less than 30% of adults)
• Difficulty breathing
• Bleeding disorders
• Death (in 1.8% of infected and non-treated persons) Mortality occurs more frequently in immunocompromised individuals.

Usually, these symptoms occur within 1-2 weeks following a tick bite (which is usually painless, and about half of the people who develop ehrlichiosis may not even remember being bitten by a tick). Symptoms associated with chronic human ehrlichiosis are as yet poorly characterized.
Ehrlichiosis is diagnosed based on symptoms, clinical presentation, and should be confirmed by specialized laboratory tests.

ARE THERE SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE EHRLICHIA LAB TEST?

None.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET MY TEST RESULTS?

Test results take approximately two (2) weeks after your specimen is collected.

WHAT ARE THE TEST RANGES FOR THE EHRLICHIA LAB TEST?

Positive or Negative. Positive results include DNA sequence identification of species detected.
Indeterminate PCR, Indeterminate Sequence – A positive PCR was obtained. However, DNA sequencing was not successful and repeat PCR was negative.

IF MY TEST RESULTS ARE POSITIVE, WHAT TYPE OF PHYSICIAN SHOULD I SEE?
