Prolactin is a hormone that is released from the pituitary gland, into the blood stream. Its function is used to stimulate breast development and milk production in women. The levels of prolactin are in very small amounts in men. In normal individual’s prolactin level vary in a 24 hour period; the levels usually rise during sleep and peak in the morning.

Women that are pregnant and breastfeeding typically have a high prolactin level as a normal physiologic response.

WHAT IS A PROLACTIN LAB TEST FOR?

WHY DO I NEED A PROLACTIN TEST?

Prolactin levels are a good measure if there is a dysfunction within your body.  Symptoms that may trigger someone to check their prolactin level include nipple discharge, headaches and visual problems, infertility (male and female), impotence, possible pituitary tumor, prolactinomas and irregular or no menstrual periods.

OTHER RELEVANT TESTS:

This test is usually selected as an “add on” to other tests.  No extra needle sticks are necessary if performed with another blood test or panel.

WHAT ARE THE TEST RESULT RANGES?

Normal Range:

Males: 1 – 18 ng/mL

Non-pregnant Females: 2 – 29 ng/mL

Pregnant Females: 2 – 209 ng/mL

High Results Indicate:

High levels of prolactin are seen in hypothyroidism, anorexia nervosa, galactorrhea, kidney disease, hypothalamic disease, certain medications, prolactinoma, or other pituitary tumors or disease.

Low Results Indicate:

There are no low values for this test.
