WHAT IS THE PRICE OF A RICKETTSIA LAB TEST?

$220.00

WHY DO I NEED TO BE TESTED FOR RICKETTSIOSIS?

The most common rickettsial disease in the United States is the Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), a tickborne disease caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii. This organism is a cause of potentially fatal human illness in North, South, and Central America, and is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected tick species. In the United States, these include the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis), Rocky Mountain wood tick (Dermacentor andersoni), and brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) and the lone star tick, (Ambylomma americanum). Typical symptoms include:
• Fever
• Headaches
• Abdominal pain
• Vomiting
• Muscle pain
• Rash (that may also develop, but is often absent in the first few days, and in some patients).
• Death can occur, particularly if not treated in the first few days of symptoms.

Usually, the first symptoms begin 2-14 days after the bite of an infected tick (which is usually painless, and about half of the people who develop RMSF may not even remember being bitten by a tick). The initial diagnosis is made based on clinical signs and symptoms, and medical history, and can later be confirmed by using specialized laboratory tests. RMSF is the most lethal tick transmitted disease in the United States, with annual mortality estimates approaching 5%. RMSF and other tick-borne diseases can be prevented by removal of ticks prior to or immediately after attachment and the concurrent use of tick repellents.
