WHAT IS TRICHOMONAS VAGINALIS?

Trichomoniasis is a common, curable Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) that is caused by the parasite Trichomonas Vaginalis.  It is spread through sexual contact and more than one million new cases occur in the United States every year.  Although many people are unaware of the STD it is becoming more and more common, with larger numbers of new cases of trichomoniasis each year than Syphilis, Chlamydia or Gonorrhea.

If you have trichomoniasis you are at a higher risk of contracting the HIV virus and developing AIDS.

WHY DO I NEED TO BE TESTED FOR TRICHOMONAS VAGINALIS?

Are you experiencing itching or irritation in the penis?  Do you have a discharge or pain on urination?

These may be symptoms of trichomoniasis.  Although many men do not experience any symptoms (only 30% of those who have become infected have any symptoms) some may have the itching and irritation commonly associated with the infection.  The parasite is spread through sexual contact and symptoms can take from 5 to 28 days to develop.  An infection is easily treatable with antibiotics.

If you suspect that you have been exposed to the trichomonas vaginalis parasite you should be tested immediately.  An infection can increase your chances of becoming infected with the HIV virus.  In men, trichomoniasis that is left untreated can cause inflammation and chronic prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate).  Untreated infections can be spread to new partners and cause re-infection to a current partner who has already been treated for trichomoniasis.  Trichomoniasis is also linked to infertility in both men and women.

TEST DETAILS:

The sample is obtained by a random urine specimen collection and no preparation is necessary.

HIGH RESULTS INDICATE:

High results are a positive test and indicate the presence of the parasite that causes trichomoniasis and an active infection.  Treatment with antibiotics should be started and sexual intercourse should be halted for the course of the treatment to prevent infecting partners.  Other sexual partners should also be tested and treated as necessary.

LOW RESULTS INDICATE:

Low results are negative and indicate no active infection.  If trichomoniasis is still suspected a follow up test may be recommended.
