WHY DO I NEED A MICROALBUMIN LAB TEST?

If present in your urine, albumin may be the result of damaged kidneys. Early detection may change treatment in an effort to preserve as much kidney function as possible.

WHAT ARE THE TEST RESULT RANGES?

Normal Range:

A normal diabetic urinalysis is less than 30 mg.

High Results Indicate:

There are two stages of high results.  The first stage – with results ranging from 30 to 299 mg ‐ indicates an early stage of kidney disease called microalbuminuria.  The second stage – with results ranging from 300+ mg ‐ indicates advanced kidney disease and is called macroalbuminuria.

Low Results Indicate:

There is no low result test range for this test. Any value under 30 mg is considered normal.

WHAT IF MY LAB TEST RESULTS ARE ABNORMAL OR OUT OF RANGE?

When abnormal results are indicated in this test, you should see your regular physician (family care, internist,  or  gynecologist). Your  regular  physician  may  refer  you  to  a  kidney  specialist  called  a nephrologist.
